January 2026 Google Spam Update, AI-Generated Spam Crackdown
Google rolled out a 12-day spam update targeting AI-generated content farms, expired-domain abuse and scaled-content manipulation. Heavy volatility hit niches like finance, health and how-to content.

[spam update · severity: high]
Google began rolling out its first major spam update of 2026 on January 15 and completed the rollout on January 27. The company called it the January 2026 Spam Update and said it would 'further reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in search results', with a particular focus on AI-generated spam, expired-domain abuse and scaled-content manipulation — the same three vectors targeted in the March 2024 update, now with improved detection.
What Google said changed
Google's Search Central blog described three enforcement changes tied to the existing spam policies:
- Scaled content abuse — producing large amounts of low-value content intended primarily to manipulate rankings, regardless of whether humans or AI wrote it
- Expired-domain abuse — buying dropped domains with backlink profiles and repurposing them to host unrelated or thin content
- Site-reputation abuse — publishing third-party content on an authoritative domain with minimal editorial oversight
Who was affected
Early data from ranking trackers showed the biggest volatility in these niches: personal finance and loan comparison sites, 'best X' affiliate roundups, AI-written how-to content, and parasite pages hosted under news or education domains. Sites that had been hit by the March 2024 spam update and had not cleaned up their content were hit again, often harder.
What to check on your site
- Audit any bulk-generated content (especially AI-assisted) for genuine usefulness — would a human recommend this page?
- Check content published in the last 18 months for signs of template reuse, thin copy, or missing first-hand experience
- Review any third-party or guest content hosted under your root domain — Google is now treating this as separate from your main site for indexing purposes
- Inspect your backlink profile for links from expired-domain networks that may have been devalued
What we recommend
If you run a content site, treat this update as a hard deadline to consolidate. Remove or rewrite anything that was produced at scale without clear editorial value. For affiliate sites, prioritise genuine product testing — photos, videos, data — that AI-only competitors can't produce. Sites that survived the March 2024 update by cleaning up their content typically held through this one too, so the playbook is unchanged: original, useful, demonstrably first-hand content.
Recovery timelines are slow. If you're hit, plan for 3–6 months of sustained quality improvements before the next core update re-evaluates your site.
