February 2026 Google Core Update, Helpful Content Fully Integrated
A 21-day broad core update completed on March 12. Google confirmed the former Helpful Content system is now fully integrated into core ranking signals, and small sites with genuine expertise saw the largest gains of any core update in three years.

[core update · severity: high]
The February 2026 Core Update rolled out from February 20 to March 12, making it one of the longer core updates in recent memory. Google confirmed that this was 'an especially significant update' and that the former standalone Helpful Content System is now fully integrated into the core ranking signals — there will no longer be separate Helpful Content updates.
What changed
Core updates re-weight how Google evaluates content quality across every type of query. This one in particular pushed three signals harder than previous cycles:
- Demonstrated first-hand experience (real photos, video, data from the author's own testing)
- Original information that isn't available on competitor pages
- Clear authorship with visible credentials (bylines, about pages, external evidence of expertise)
Who was affected
Niche experts and small sites gained heavily — the largest positive movements in a core update since 2023. Biggest losers were mid-sized content mills that had been producing formulaic 'listicle + affiliate link' content without genuine testing, and sites that rebuilt themselves around 'programmatic SEO' in the past 18 months.
What to check
- GSC Performance: compare clicks and impressions for Feb 20–Mar 12 against the four prior weeks, grouped by page type
- Identify your 10–20 worst-hit pages. For each, ask: does this page contain anything a human couldn't find on the top 3 competitor results?
- Run a sitewide E-E-A-T audit: author pages, About page, contact page, citations in content
- Check comment and review sections — empty or spam-filled UGC is a new negative signal this cycle
What we recommend
Don't panic-edit. Core updates measure the whole site, so individual page edits rarely move the needle in the short term. Instead, identify the one or two content types that gained in your competitive set and build out a small number of exceptional examples — original photography, unique data, in-depth testing. Re-evaluate after the next core update (typically 3–6 months away).
If you depend on Google traffic, this update reinforces a pattern that's held since 2022: Google is steadily shifting rewards away from sites that 'do SEO' and toward sites that do genuinely useful work.
